Vent

How do I control a vent?

Common controls

  • Mode: volume control, pressure control, pressure support depending context.
  • VT: size of delivered breath; use PBW in adults.
  • RR: number of breaths; major driver of minute ventilation.
  • PEEP: baseline pressure to prevent collapse/recruit alveoli.
  • FiO₂: oxygen concentration; start high in rescue then titrate.

Peak vs plateau

Peak pressure reflects airway resistance plus lung/chest mechanics. Plateau pressure is measured with an inspiratory hold and better reflects static lung/chest compliance. Ask RT to perform and interpret with the waveform.
